Edmonton - June 19, 2012 - Our good friends over at DEDFEST have dug up a rare treat for their July screening over at Metro Cinema at the Garneau, with a Friday, July 13th screening of one of the best of the F13 sequels, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives!

I can still vividly remember showing up at the old Capitol Theatre in Winnipeg on Friday, August 1st, 1986, for the highly anticipated ‘return’ of Jason Voorhees. After filling their coffers with some record-breaking box office from 1984’s ‘The Final Chapter’, Paramount decided to revive the F13 franchise with 1985’s ill-advised ‘Part V: A New Beginning’…but because dear old Jason had ‘died’ at the end of Final Chapter, Part V featured a killer ‘pretending’ to be Jason. After the MPAA forced Paramount to basically strip every bit of gore from the film in order to avoid an X rating, we were left with an ultra-lame F13 quickie - arguably the worst in the series.

But, they nevertheless went back to the well once again; only this time, someone at Paramount finally realized how ridiculous the whole series was and hired a decent writer/director (Tom McLoughlin). Better still, they him have some fun with a funny and winking script that poked fun at the whole genre (one could make the argument that Jason Lives sent up the whole slasher-movie genre a full decade before Scream did).

With a pre-credits sequence featuring a hilarious cameo by Welcome Back Kotter’s Ron ‘Horshack’ Palillo; a great theme song by Alice Cooper (check out the music video!); some great scares; and a fast-paced, action-packed storyline (more than a little inspired by Terminator), Jason Lives is a total hoot from beginning to end. It’s exactly the sort of film that is best seen with a like-minded audience - preferably one that’s been wound up with a few adult bevys beforehand.

So forget DVD, Blu-Ray, or Netflix for just one night - because this screening of Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives is presented in 35mm, straight from the Paramount vaults!
