Edmonton - October 23, 2012 - Edmonton Police Service officers, along with Edmonton Oil Kings players, are visiting schools to encourage students to make the right choices.

What: Photo opportunity of EPS officers and Oil Kings players talking to students and participating in Officer Skills Challenge
When: Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 11:15am - 12:45pm. Photo opportunity and comments at 11:15am. Media can stay for the Challenge
Where: Ross Sheppard High School, main gymnasium, 13546 - 111 Ave.

“People say youth are our future, and it’s true,” says Supt. Darren Eastcott. “It’s also true that adults around them - teachers, parents, and community mentors - all play a role in helping them make the right choices.”

Recruiting officers visit various schools throughout the year to introduce students to a career in policing, and to test certain policing skills like problem solving, investigations, and fitness.

Oil Kings players will be going with them as part of an initiative between the team and EPS. Each player is partnered with an EPS officer, who will act as a mentor and support system for the player. Together, they will go out and participate in community events.

“We’re very proud to be a part of this mentorship program and want to thank the Edmonton Police Service for making it possible.” says Oil Kings GM Bob Green. “The EPS shares many of the same values we teach to our players. Programs like this help us to attain our goal of developing them both on and off the ice for their future careers.”
