 | The winning streak has ended for the Sabres, coming to a halt after one game. | | Buffalo - February 6, 2015 - Following every Sabres game, we’ll be taking a little look at the previous night’s action with a little segment called “good, bad and ugly”. Expect a loooooooot of ugly.
The winning streak is over, ladies and gentlemen. They had a nice run, but let’s get right into last night’s 3-0 home loss to the St. Louis Blues.
The Good
So hey, it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought it was going to be. Hell, the Sabres didn’t even really look bad. There were times where Blues goalie Jake Allen had to be very good and, though I’m not saying the Sabres ever really had a chance at this, they at least made the Blues work for it.
Also of note is the fact that Jhonas Enroth is looking more like the Enroth of November and December again. He’s not quite to those superhuman levels, but he’s been playing much better of late and he’s the reason this was even a game until Tarasenko scored with a little more than five minutes to go to effectively end things.
In seasons like this, you kind of have to find the little things here and there to point out as positives because there aren’t going to be a whole lot of them in terms of the direction on the ice. This was a pleasant surprise, though it never felt like the Sabres really had a chance.
The Bad
There are times the weaknesses of this team really shine through. There are times where this team is akin to a 10-year-old trying to hang with NHLers. Teams play keep away with the Sabres at times and there’s almost nothing they can do about it.
It’s hard to really pinpoint specific things because so many issues plague this team, but that is the one thing that infuriates me more than anything else. I’m not sure if it’s a hustle thing, I’m not sure if it’s a talent thing, but for whatever reason, they cannot maintain possession or take the puck back when they absolutely need to get it.
The Ugly
Having tried to find the silver lining, there is one thing that constantly plagues my mind and it’s the fact that this team is just not fun to watch. Which, yeah, they’re bad so they’re probably not going to be fun to watch on most nights, but there’s not even this illusion that they can win.
Like I said, this wasn’t the scorched Earth I was expecting out the Blues, but there was never a feeling that the Sabres might win. When Tarasenko scored to make it 2-0, they may as well have gone back to the dressing room because a two-goal deficit for the Sabres may as well be a 10-goal deficit.
I love this team and likely will for the rest of my days, but it’s hard to care much when there’s no hope of winning on most nights.
