MPP McNaughton: Ontario’s Sex-Ed Consultations Just Beginning
This past week, a number of unofficial "consultations" on Kathleen Wynne's sex-ed agenda took place throughout Ontario and some of them saw angry exchanges between concerned parents and Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal MPPs. Toronto - March 14, 2015 - This past week, a number of unofficial "consultations" on Kathleen Wynne's sex-ed agenda took place throughout Ontario and some of them saw angry exchanges between concerned parents and Kathleen Wynne’s Liberal MPPs.

"Parents are reacting quite strongly against Wynne's sex-ed agenda," noted Monte McNaughton, PC MPP and candidate for the Ontario PC leadership. "This is more or less the same failed curriculum that Wynne tried to force on parents back in 2010. Parents are angry about the explicit nature of her agenda, and that she never sought their consent to teach this material to their children".

Wynne’s sex-ed agenda was not raised in the last Ontario election, and instead Wynne's new plans were announced barely two days after the 2014 school board elections were completed. In November 2014, the Ontario Ministry of Education conducted a short survey of a small number of parents completely ignoring the vast majority of families, school councils and school boards. The survey questions were unrelated to the contents of the curriculum, and the small number of parents asked to complete the survey were not permitted to review the proposed curriculum, nor were they permitted to discuss the survey with other parents in their schools

"When they finally released the proposed changes to the curriculum last month, Wynne and Education Minister Liz Sandals raced to declare that the consultations were over," said McNaughton. "But they are quickly finding out that Ontario parents have much to say about what their children are taught. This is far from over."

McNaughton added that the vigorous and spirited discussions that we saw in suburban Toronto this past week show that one thing is certain: "The real consultations have only just begun, and Ontario parents are going to have their say."

Wynne and her Education Minister have sidelined parents and instead have trumpeted the role of so-called "education experts" in designing the new sex-ed curriculum. Unfortunately for Wynne and Sandals, foremost among the experts is admitted child pornographer and former Deputy Education Minister Ben Levin.

Ben Levin was the top education bureaucrat under Kathleen Wynne when she was the Minister of Education. He oversaw the development of the now infamous 2010 sex-ed curriculum, which was withdrawn after only a few days. When she became Premier in 2013, Wynne appointed Levin to serve as a key member of her transition team. Recently, Levin admitted to three counts of child pornography including: making written child pornography, counselling a person to commit a sexual assault, and possession of child pornography.

"Parents are the first educators of their children," insisted McNaughton, "and it is up to them to decide what is 'age appropriate' for their children. It is for parents to decide what their children should be taught, and when, and not for the government to dictate, especially not child pornographers like Ben Levin, and especially not Kathleen Wynne who, for years, has relied on people like Levin for advice on designing her sex-ed agenda."
