We owe retiring or defeated MPPs a severance package
This probably a waste of breath but I see severance packages and pensions for elected officials has reared its ugly head again. All that aside it may surprise you to know I am in favour of both pensions and severance packages. Folks, we owe them a package.

Cornwall - Nov. 9, 2011 - On a light note, can you believe there is a discussion going on as to whether the national symbol should be a beaver or a polar bear? The idea was run up by Senator Eaton and even she is taken back by the response. I mean really folks! Rome is burning get focused on worthy priorities.

  • The gun registry is in the news again. The argument against it is confusing. People register their cars - hell they even register their kids but they don’t want to register their "guns"? For the record, I am in favour of keeping it simply because the police say they want it - good enough for me. It is already there why not keep it? I am sure the government wasted some money getting it started (don’t they always?) but I don’t believe it was $2 billion. Even if it was the money is now gone and I direct your attention to previous comment about Rome .

  • The pipeline through the US seems to be in trouble. The people against it are fundamentally against oil and are in favour of alternate sources. Better get Plan B in place before you parade against Plan A.

  • You know I wrote last time about the kids in the "Occupy" movement being sincere but too helter-skelter in their goals. Since then I read a piece in MacLeans about all the really young MPs in Ottawa and upon reflection maybe that is exactly what we need - a wave of really young MPs & MPPs, all parties. Do you think???

  • In the sports world a mix of the Silly to the Say What? There is talk now from the Olympic people about whether the women in the new entry of boxing should be required to wear skirts. Thinking about that for a minute - hard to grasp isn’t it. These are the same lunkheads that run around the world in crested blazers staying in suites at five star hotels and yet they said this out loud?

  • Watched some curling on the weekend - Love the game but - these guys are starting to look like Nascar drivers. They have so much advertising on their uniforms - you end up not noticing any of it.

  • My family in BC tell me that the BC Lions have been blacking out the games since they returned to BC Place. Fans are being told the crowd has to be 48,000 before they lift it. The CFL is not a 45,000 seat league - get over it! F0r the people upset - for almost all going to the game is not an option. Personally what intrigues me is, why would TSN give up that big a market while owners chase the impossible dream seeming to forget that it was TSN that restored the leagues credibility.

  • I see the NBA lockout has turned into amateur hour. The owners put an income split on the table and told the other side that if they didn’t agree by the end of business Wednesday, they would withdraw and put a lesser amount on the table. That kind of John Wayne cowboy stuff is almost sure to backfire, especially put to a bunch of wealthy, competitive athletes.

This probably a waste of breath but I see severance packages and pensions for elected officials has reared its ugly head again.

For the record, let me say politicians are not my favourite people. Not because they are lazy like a lot of people say, because in fact I don’t agree with that. Their job maybe the worst around - it is 24-7 with modest money and constantly getting dumped on from all sides. The reason I don’t warm up to them is what motivates them to run in the first place. Then they spend almost all of their time focusing on getting re-elected. They all say they are motivated by the want to serve and I suspect most of them mean it going in - then they are reined in by the party whip and the need to win again.

All that aside it may surprise you to know I am in favour of both pensions and severance packages. We are asking people to give up what they are doing and represent us for 4-8 years or more. When they come out of there they almost certainly have been left behind in their fields. If they are defeated in an election, "They have been laid off by us .“ Folks, we owe them a package. The same applies to the pension I didn’t confirm this, but as I recall the pension is not vested until they have been there for six years. If we want to attract good people these benefits in my mind are minimum.

If we don’t, we end up with a room full of Lawyers (they will always be lawyers) or rich power trippers. As I have said before all politics are local as Tip O’Neil said So, it always comes back to us to pick good people and make them accountable to US not some 30 something in a cheap suit in the leaders office.

Like I said we can all dream

    Keep Smiling
