Cornwall - Feb. 11, 2012 - A lot of talk about changes to Old Age Security (OAS) lately and all it has done is scare the bejesus out of we seniors. I support the plan as is (even though I don’t get it myself). Nobody has convinced me that this is "crisis" costly maybe but not a crisis so go find another big number that you can attack. Who do these politicians and talking heads think count on this $500 per month. They say people will have to work longer. Now I worked until I was 72 because I could, but I would guess a huge chunk of the work force would not have work available to them or be up to it even if it was available.
Isn’t it interesting listening to a wide range of economists (people who try to turn an art into a science) attempting to make a case that suits their opinions or whoever paid them to do the study.
The people who need this money - and they number in the millions - need this to get by not to go to Florida in the winter. I heard one guy say this baby boom bubble would cost 0.5% of GDP.
The people that count on it are not working in career jobs that can be extended. I know other countries are raising the qualifying age over time, but we better have a support plan of some kind to at least give some hope to people that the work will be there and please don’t make any policy just because an economist says the math works
- Sid Crosby is a star and a great player and is getting that kind of attention - but enough already with the media obsession. It appears that it is not life or career threatening but If I was Sid I would not be happy with the way I had been treated.
- Sam Gagner’s recent run has been fun to watch, (See the 30 Second Timeout section on this site) and I had lost sight of the fact that he is only 22 years old and in his fifth year in the NHL. This makes me wonder how the sports media spends so much talking time about him being trade bait. Where does that stuff come from? Certainly not team management.
- One of my favourite gripes in recent years has been how coaches in pro sport seem to think it is about them. I think they have coached football to a standstill and are trying to do the same in hockey. Then we come to Ron Wilson coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs. He brings his team into Winnipeg and young Reimer (their goalie) has played four of the last five games and expressed excitement about playing in Winnipeg in front of friends and family. Wilson proves once again that he is a jerk and sits the kid. I don’t know what reason he thought he had but there isn’t one except Wilson being on a power trip. When asked about it Reimer simply said "I am not the coach"
- Phillip Blancher wrote a good piece on the Caterpillar closing in London and he is right there is plenty of blame to go around. The thing that jumps out to me is there seems to be a race to the lowest common denominator and the losers will be the Union movement and the workers caught in the backwash.
