Windsor - January 29, 2013 - Random thoughts for a rainy day.

Today, I became aware of a movement called “Meatless Monday”. According to their website it is gathering steam and promotes a day (apparently Monday, hence the name) when you don’t eat meat. Even Paul McCartney is involved with the idea. Yes, that Paul McCartney. His cause is “Meat Free Monday”. Same idea. Hats off to Sir Paul, because I know it’s a good cause, but at the moment, I can’t support a whole day. How about Tuesday, between 2:30 and 5:00? That, I could do. Maybe, but for now, I’m quite happy with a little thing we in the Cornett household call “Meatloaf Monday”.

The past weekend was not very kind to my two beloved hockey teams - the Spits and the Leafs. Since last Thursday they were outscored (both teams combined) 30-15. But all that will change with this week’s games. Leafs play the Sabres tonight (c’mon boys, we’re due to beat these guys!) before facing the struggling Capitals Thursday, and the Bruins Saturday, while the Spits host Peterborough Thursday night. A home and home series against former captain Saverio Posa and the Guelph Storm finishes up their weekend. It says here that both teams will find themselves four points better come next Meatloaf Monday.

OHL referee Joe Monette has found himself in hot water after an alleged inappropriate tweet Friday night. While on assignment for weekend games in Sault Ste. Marie, the Windsor ref is said to have tweeted some nasty words directed at the women of the Soo. After the tweet appeared, Monette was told he wasn’t working the game between the Greyhounds and Generals. Many have called for further actions against Monette. If the allegations are true, I say he should be forced to work the balance of the season in the Soo, and deal with the fallout.

This morning, while carpooling home from work, my friend Rob and I were listening to CBC Radio Two. Robbie’s always been ahead of the curve when it comes to musical tastes, and his radio is tuned in to 89.9 a lot. I have come to appreciate the station that plays music you don’t get a chance to hear a lot on the FM dial. This morning was no different, as we heard a song by Paul Simon called “The Afterlife” from his album “So Beautiful”. It made me think of Simon’s “Graceland” album (1986), which is one of the first CDs I ever ordered from Columbia House, before I even owned a CD player. I dug it out this afternoon and gave a spin for the first time in years. I forgot what a great album it is. Thanks, CBC.

This Sunday is going to be Super. The upstart Baltimore Ravens will face the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. Should be a great game. Flacco vs Kaepernick. Ray Lewis vs everyone else. My son Will is a Ravens fan, and I told him for Sunday’s game I’ll trade in my Steelers colours and support his team. As long as he supports my guys in next year’s Super Bowl. He said he’d get back to me.

Have a great week! Go Spits! Go Leafs!

TC out.
