Edmonton - January 22, 2012 - Day six of action marked the end of the road for Canadian youngster Milos Raonic, as he was bounced by Aussie Lleyton Hewitt. The Australian moves into the second week of play but will have now have the pleasure of facing Novak Djokovic in the round of sixteen.

Djokovic continued his dominance by dismissing Nicolas Mahut in straight sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 and has lost only ten games during the first week of play. It took the number one player in the world just over an hour to defeat a game Mahut, who was clearly struggling with some sort of injury. To his credit, he finished the match but even a healthy Mahut would have given the dominant Djokovic little trouble. Novak fired thirty-one winners on his way to victory while committing only eight unforced errors.

Hewitt came back from a set down to defeat Raonic, in what was a match up of two contrasting styles. The hard hitting Canadian was up against the veteran who never quits and will counter punch to the very end. Raonic took the opening set but once the former number one player in the world became accustomed to the pace of the youngsters ball and made the necessary adjustments, Milos was out of his league. He is still learning and developing his game but on this night, he was no match for the fan favourite, falling in four sets 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. The twenty-third ranked Raonic struggled with his forehand and return of serve all match long and allowed Hewitt far too many free points by making fifty-four unforced errors. That being said, Lleyton was the better man and was full marks for the victory.

In other third round play, fourth seed Andy Murray had little trouble with Michael Llodra in defeating the forty-sixth ranked player in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-0. While sixth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did the same to Portugal's Frederico Gil, winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 to move onto the fourth round. Other winners included fifth seed David Ferrer, Frenchman Richard Gasquet and Japan's Kei Nishikori.

The other big upset of the day came when Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin bounced fourteenth seed Gael Monfils in five sets 6-2, 7-5, 5-7, 1-6, 6-4. In what was a tale of two different matches, Kukushkin took the opening two sets from what appeared to be an injured Monfils. Yet late in the third, the twenty-five year old suddenly found his game and managed to take the third and fourth sets but the ninety-second ranked Kukushkin would prevail in the end.

Day Seven will feature the opening batch of matches in the round of sixteen and will see the likes of Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin Del Potro and Tomas Berdych but the feature match will be between Roger Federer and Australian teenager Bernard Tomic.
