Whitby - February 5, 2012 - Put a fork in ‘em, they’re done. The Montreal Canadiens are ice-cold in the win column but red-hot in the loss department as the team suffered their third straight defeat on Saturday afternoon at home to the Washington Capitals.

Dennis Wideman, Matt Hendricks and Alexander Semin scored for Washington. Tomas Vokoun registered the shutout for Washington while Peter Budaj suffered the loss for Montreal. The Semin goal came via penalty shot in the third period.

Disheartening, listless, lack of drive, inability to score, and frustrating are some words that best describe the Canadiens’ play on this afternoon - you can add your own comments as well. At the time of writing, Les Bleu-Blanc-Rouges have fallen as far as a team can fall in the Eastern Division and now sit in 27th place overall in the NHL. The Canadiens next face the Winnipeg Jets on SuperBowl Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Happy Anniversary Scott!
With the 3-0 loss, Scott Gomez has now gone a full 365 days without scoring one goal. Perhaps he should telephone Edmonton Oilers’ forward Sam Gagner for a few goal-scoring pointers. I can only pray we won’t be talking about this same topic on February 5, 2013.

Kaberle come on…
Tomas Kaberle’s performance in this matchup is the exact reason why I did not like the trade for Montreal when it first happened with the Carolina Hurricanes. Jaroslav Spacek would not be this soft. Kaberle likely played his worst game as a Hab.

Leblanc, Palushaj call-ups
Louis Leblanc and Aaron Palushaj played on the fourth line and were relatively ineffective. Both players saw less than ten minutes of icetime.

Mutiny on the Bounty?
I really was trying to stay positive since returning to work for a myriad of reasons. However, with the Canadiens choking a couple of days ago losing to the New Jersey Devils in the final few minutes of the third period and now today with this afternoon’s sad performance, I can’t help but think head coach Randy Cunneyworth may be losing the support of his active roster. Have the players stopped playing for Cunneyworth or is the losing streak just a result of bad luck and bad breaks? My choice is the former. Cunneyworth now sports a record of 6-12-2 as interim head coach. Enjoy the experience while it lasts Randy.

Sell Sell Sell!
Little can be said to describe the plight of the Montreal Canadiens’ 2011-12 season. It is this writer’s opinion that the team has no other choice than to become sellers heading towards the NHL trade deadline on February 28th. The Canadiens do not have the horses or fire power to claw their way back into a playoff position. It’s time to clean house, starting at the top and working downwards. Re-stock the farm with youth and skill and ride out the rest of this season.

For the love of hockey, I surely hope the Canadiens clean house. Can I be any clearer on this topic?

Until next time, play every game as if it is your last one…
