Yet another third period comeback leads Senators to victory
The Ottawa Senators stormed onto the ice in the third period and scored four straight third period goals to come back from a two goal deficit to win 6-4 over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Senators are now 7-1-2 in their last 10 games and have gotten a point in each of their last six games 5-0-1.

Ottawa - January 9, 2012 - The Ottawa Senators stormed onto the ice in the third period and scored four straight third period goals to come back from a two goal deficit to win 6-4 over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Senators are now 7-1-2 in their last 10 games and have gotten a point in each of their last six games 5-0-1.

The Senators got off to a fast start when Daniel Alfredsson opened the scoring just 54 seconds into the game. After both teams swapped goals the Flyers scored two goals in a 28 second span late in the first period to give the Flyers a 3-2 first period lead.

Sluggish 2nd period

The Senators had a sluggish second period and came out of the gate slow. The Flyers took the game to the Senators, scoring their 4th goal on the rebound by Matt Reid who scored his 13th goal of the season. In both of the games this weekend the momentum has switched back and forth between each side. Today, momentum was clearly on the Flyers side. The Flyers out hustled the Senators in the period and managed to draw a couple of bad penalties. If it were not for Craig Anderson the Flyers could’ve lengthened the lead to 5-2 and essentially put the game on ice.

Third period comeback

The Senators stormed out of the gates and scored four goals in the third period to secure the win. On the first goal the Senators were a little bit fortunate to score. Colin Greening through the puck in front of the net to Jason Spezza, however the puck was deflected by the Flyers defenseman past goaltender Illia Bryzaglov to make the score 4-3. The Senators continued the scoring by adding goals from Erik Karlsson, Filip Kuba and an empty netter by Nick Foligno.

The Senators entered the game tied with the Boston Bruins for the most goals scored in the third period. The Senators four goals gives them 61 goals in the third period. The Senators have scored almost half of their goals this season in the third period and in overtime, 65 out of 131 (49.8%). The Senators also lead the NHL in come from behind victories when trailing after the 2nd period with six victories. Contrast that with the Philadelphia Flyers who were 19-1-1 when leading go into the third period.

The Senators dominated the Flyers in third period and basically took the game away, by out skating and out hitting the Flyers.

Erik Karlsson

Erik Karlsson was simply fantastic today against the Flyers with a goal, his sixth of the season, and an assist and was a +5 in the game. Karlsson leads all defensemen in the NHL with 41 points, eight points ahead of the second highest scoring defenseman Brian Campbell of the Florida Panthers. Karlsson is also a solid +7 this year in 5 on 5 situations and I’ve found that in the last 10 games he’s cut down on the turnovers inside his own zone.

All-Stars

I don’t normally comment on comments made on Twitter, but I couldn’t help but notice the number of Flyer fans tweeting and criticizing the Senators for having so many all-stars. Often referring to the fact that the Flyers were dominating the so-called all-stars. It was nice to see the Senators end up taking 3 out of a possible 4 points against the Flyers and that all of the All-Stars got at least one point in the game.

Parting shots

- Two of the Flyers first three goals beat Craig Anderson high on the blocker side. It looked like the Flyers were aiming for the top corner. After giving up the second period goal off of a rebound, I thought the Senators were in trouble because they weren’t getting good goaltending. However, Anderson made a huge stop late in the second period to keep the score at 4-2. Anderson seemed to get better as the game went on.

- Filip Kuba was excellent on the defensive end. He ended up being a +4 in the game and he made a big play when he managed to catch up to Flyers star Claude Geroux who was on a breakaway and stopped him from getting a good shot off.

- The Senators now play nine of their next 10 games on the road, in what will be the most important road trip of the season for the team. The Senators are 8-7-5 on the road and their last road trip was successful. If the Senators can take 12 out of 20 points in their next 10 games, they can set themselves up nicely for the playoff run where they will be playing 17 of their final 29 games at home.
