Edmonton - June 15, 2012 - Canada has announced that it will participate in the Copa Mexico de Naciones Sub-15, a boys’ U-15 tournament in Ciudad de Mexico from 18-24 June 2012 and FC Edmonton Reserve Team player Aymar Sigue has been named to the team.

Canada is one of eight teams participating in the tournament, with group matches against Mexico (18 June), Nigeria (19 June) and Chile (20 June). Also competing in the event are Colombia, Costa Rica, Spain and USA from the opposite group.

Canada’s U-15 coach Michael Findlay has selected 20 players for the event; with the 10-day national youth camp running 16-25 June. All 20 selected players come from clubs in Canada.

Following group matches on 18, 19 and 20 June, the top teams from each group advance to the semi-final phase on 22 June. The tournament final will be played on 24 June.

This marks Canada’s first project for 1997-born players. Players in this age group are eligible for the biennial CONCACAF & FIFA competitions in the U-17 category until 2013 (with 1996-born players) and in the U-20 category until 2017.

“Anytime you get called to represent your country it’s an extremely proud moment, and certainly Aymar deserves this opportunity,” said Reserve team head coach Jeff Paulus. “His development within our academy over the past few months has been quite remarkable and I am looking forward to seeing how he manages to get on at the international level.”

“After Hanson Boakai’s attendance at the last U-17 National team camp in Italy, Aymar continues one of the clubs objectives of supporting our national team program and developing local Canadian talent,” the coach added.
