Detroit deserves to dance in the streets like 1984
As the Detroit Tigers prepare for the upcoming World Series, I think back to 1984, the last time they won it all. That ’84 team was loaded with stars, and boasted a line-up that made opposing managers cringe whenever they faced them. Gibson, Trammell, Whitaker, Parrish, Morris - they were all game changers.

Windsor - October 23, 2012 - As the Detroit Tigers prepare for the upcoming World Series, I think back to 1984, the last time they won it all. That ’84 team was loaded with stars, and boasted a line-up that made opposing managers cringe whenever they faced them. Gibson, Trammell, Whitaker, Parrish, Morris - they were all game changers.

Being in Detroit with my friends on the night they became champions is something I will never forget. We watched the game at The Old Shillelagh, and the place was packed. The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, chasing San Diego Padres starter Mark Thurmond after only one third of an inning. San Diego tied the game in the fourth, but in the bottom of the fifth the Tigers would regain the lead 4-3. Going into the eight inning the score was 5-3 Tigers. The Padres scored one in their half of the eighth, making it 5-4, but in the bottom of the eighth Kirk Gibson came to the plate with two men on base. Gibson faced Goose Gossage and took him deep, for a three run homer, his second tater of the game.

The Irish pub exploded as we watched Gibby round the bases for the second time, and soon we found ourselves walking down Michigan Avenue towards Tiger Stadium. It seemed like a dream, with people everywhere, high-fiving and celebrating. There was jubilation, and dancing in the streets.

I hope we can dance again this year.

Go get’ em, Tigers!!

Detroit deserves it.
