Lancaster - Mar. 7, 2011 - A local cheese producer has made the short list of finalists in the seventh Canadian Cheese Grand Prix.

A panel of cheese experts recently spent two days tasting and evaluating over 200 of the best cheeses in Canada, and they narrowed the field down to 51 - including three from Glengarry Fine Cheese.

The Lancaster-area business made the short list with its Lankaaster Traditional Gouda (semi-soft cheese category), Lankaaster Traditional Gouda Aged (firm cheese) and Celtic Blue (blue cheese).

The category champions and grand champion will be revealed during a special event in Toronto on April 20.

For two days, a jury of food industry experts carefully observed, touched, smelled, and tasted each cheese and evaluated them according to precise criteria, including colour and general appearance, texture and body, flavour and salt content. To be eligible for the Grand Prix, cheeses must be produced in Canada exclusively from 100 per cent Canadian cow's milk and be available to consumers at point of sale at the time they are judged.

The Canadian Cheese Grand Prix is a competition sponsored and hosted by the Dairy Farmers of Canada, celebrating the high quality and proud tradition of Canadian cheese made from 100 per cent Canadian milk.

The solid showing in the Grand Prix is just the latest milestone for Glengarry Fine Cheese, which has already built quite a name for itself in just a few short years.

The company specializes in gourmet cheeses made from local cow's milk and manufactured on site at their facility on County Road 34 in South Glengarry.
