Cornwall - Sep. 24, 2011 - After a beautiful summer, it’s hard to believe that we are already heading into another flu season!

The Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) reminds you that unlike the common cold, the influenza virus can leave you ill for seven days or more. Not only can this cause you to lose time at work, but you may also infect others around you. Some people are at much greater risk of becoming seriously ill, such as the elderly, young children or people with medical conditions.

To lower your risk of infection and to protect those who are more vulnerable than you, follow these four tips:

Wash your hands often (watch our handwashing videos on www.eohu.ca, click on the YouTube icon).

Cough and sneeze into your sleeve and teach your children to do the same. Stay home from work or school when you’re sick.

Protect yourself and your family by making sure all members get the flu shot.

Remember, it takes about two weeks after the shot is given for the body to build up protection against the flu. That’s why it’s best to get vaccinated in the fall, before the flu season really gets under way.

To get the flu shot, make an appointment with your doctor or visit one of the EOHU’s free flu immunization clinics. For clinic dates, times and locations, check your mailbox for our flu clinic pamphlet or check out the online version at www.eohu.ca.

For more information, call the EOHU at 613-933-1375 or at 1 800 267-7120. Ask for Health Line.
