Timely goals push Colts past Braves
Colts captain Jacob Laliberte checks Braves forward Stan Smrke during Central Hockey League action Thursday at the Cornwall Civic Complex. The Colts edged the Braves 3-1.

Cornwall - Feb. 17, 2011 - Between league-leading scorer Jacob Laliberte, the Spink twins and the speedy Mitch Zion, the Colts have no shortage of offensive weapons in their lineup.

But it was a pair of unlikely heroes who provided the offensive firepower on Thursday night to help lead the Colts past the Brockville Braves by a score of 3-1 at the Cornwall Civic Complex.

Colts tough guy Ty Perry got the home team on the scoreboard first midway through the second period and Drew Henry scored the eventual game-winner on a breakaway early in the third period to seal the deal for the Colts, much to the delight of the 1,258 fans in attendance.

A Colts victory was far from a certainty after Mark Belvedere connected for the Braves with just nine seconds to go in the second period, tying the game at 1-1.

Things didn't look much better early in the final frame as the Colts found themselves killing off a penalty. Still, the league-leading Colts found a way to hold off the determined Braves, and Henry scored soon after to put Cornwall ahead.

Kevin Cole added the insurance marker for the Colts several minutes later, and netminder Pete Karvouniaris managed to stave off the Braves' attack, stopping 34 shots - including 16 in the third period - to secure the win.

The third-place Braves won't have to wait long for revenge as the Colts will travel to Brockville tonight for a rematch.

With the win, the Colts' record improved to 45-10-1-0 (91 points), good for first place overall.
