Cornwall - Jul. 12, 2011 - Scott Dunne believes that a holistic approach to healing is the best approach. Mr. Dunne recently established Upper Canada Physiotherapy at 533 Pitt Street, offering manual therapy, soft tissue work, acupuncture, and coordination exercises to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes and support systems.

As a holistic physiotherapist, Mr. Dunne practices in the frame of mind that no injury exists in isolation and therefore cannot be treated as such.

“To truly recover from physical injury, the treatment approach should be multi-faceted, multi-disciplinary and not just focused on the area of pain,” said Mr. Dunne. “I believe that when a body is in a healthy balanced state, healing will occur. Those of us with injuries don’t need a ‘healer’ but rather facilitators that can help us balance the body as a whole – internally and externally.”

The treatment approach at Upper Canada Physiotherapy involves a detailed biomechanical assessment to identify restricted joint movements, neuromuscular insufficiencies and movement patterns that need to be re-educated. Many movement patterns become habits as we live everyday life – some are good habits but others are bad habits. The overall goal is to increase the patient’s internal body awareness and replace old habits with newly learned healthy movement patterns. Mr. Dunne compared physiotherapy to “learning to play an instrument and gaining a more coordinated muscle memory.”

Mr. Dunne is also certified in spinal manipulation. In discussing this aspect of his practice, Mr. Dunne said he treats the “fuse box” (the spine) which is the essential link between the brain and the rest of our body. The “mother board” (the brain) can be addressed through specific movement patterns, that when repeated, can literally change the brain – this is known as neuroplasticity. There is an important connection between the nervous system and the coordination and strengthening of our bodies.

If you have a need for treatment, and have a natural healing focus, Upper Canada Physiotherapy just may be right for you. For more information, call 613-932-8520 or visit www.upcanphysio.com.
