Toronto - May. 21, 2020:
Mitchell Marner is known more for his offense with the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he said winning the Selke Trophy as the top defensive forward in the NHL is something he'd like to achieve.

"The award that I think would be really cool to win and be acknowledged for is the Selke," Marner told the Connor Carrick Podcast on Wednesday. "The names that are always in the Selke are guys that everyone is scared of on the ice. The guys that you know you're going to play against them and it's going to [stink]."

Marner scored 67 points (16 goals, 51 assists) and was plus-6 in 59 games before the NHL season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. Last season, he set NHL career highs with 26 goals, 68 assists, 94 points and a plus-22 rating.

Marner has 291 points (83 goals, 208 assists) in 300 NHL games over four seasons, an average of 0.97 points per game that is 21st in the NHL over that time (minimum 200 games).

The 23-year-old wing became a reliable penalty-killer for the Maple Leafs this season, leading Toronto forwards in shorthanded time on ice (129:44) and shorthanded ice time per game (2:12). He is ninth in the NHL with 64 takeaways, which are second on the Maple Leafs behind center Auston Matthews's 78.

St. Louis Blues center Ryan O'Reilly won the Selke Trophy last season for the first time. Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron has won the trophy, which is voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, four times since 2011-12, and Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar won it twice in the past four seasons.

The last wing to win the Selke Trophy was Jere Lehtinen of the Dallas Stars in 2003, his third. Bob Gainey won it the first four seasons it was awarded (1978-81), and Craig Ramsay (1985) and Dirk Graham (1991) won the trophy once each.
