SNAPSHOT - Green Heron on the dock

Stoney Point - Jul. 26, 2014:
This morning I was standing on the dock and this Green Heron landed on the dock a few doors down. He was fishing for minnows. I grabbed the camera and in my rush, I didn’t get the settings quite right but here are some photos of his visit. Cynthia and I saw him a few weeks ago when we were out for a kayak ride. He came to this dock a couple of times today.

The ROM Field Guide says the “Green Heron frequently baits for fish with a variety of lures, including crusts of bread, feathers and earthworms freshly dug for this purpose. Capture rate is highest using live bait, and less experienced juvenile birds rarely achieve the success of adults.”
