Edmonton - June 22, 2012 - IN HONOUR OF THE RELEASE OF STEVE CARELL’S LATEST FILM, SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD, WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT HIS FINEST…

I love Steve Carell, and I must admit it was a dark day in the Movie Guy household when he left ‘The Office’ last year. Although I keep watching the show (mainly out of habit), it really has become a pale imitation of its former self. On the bright side, he’s managed to carve out a wonderful film career, filling his resume with a plethora of memorable films.

To celebrate the release of his latest comedic drama, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, we take a fond look back at 5 of his most memorable roles...

5. BRUCE ALMIGHTY - with just a few minutes of screen time, Carell managed to steal the show from the great Jim Carrey, instantly cementing his status as a movie star in the making, and making his days on The Daily Show numbered.

4. DATE NIGHT / DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS - after admirably filling Don Adams’ legendary shoes in the Get Smart remake (2008), Carell had a HUGE 2010. In addition to the massive animated hit Despicable Me, Carrell appeared in these 2 very funny comedy hits. In Date Night, he and Tina Fey propel a ‘decent’ script into the comedy stratosphere, mainly due to their fantastic chemistry.

And speaking of chemistry, Carell and frequent collaborator Paul Rudd make for a hilarious team in the under-rated Dinner for Schmucks - a movie that got decidedly mixed reviews to go along with its middling box-office returns. But for my money, this movie is fall-down funny, and worth the price of admission for the stunningly clever dead mouse dioramas.

3. ANCHORMAN - another supporting role, and another memorable character in the Carell canon, as he brings to life the incredibly dense Brick Tamland. It takes a special kind of comedy genius to bring a character like this to life, and it’s Carell’s brilliant delivery of each and every line that makes this role so special (and helped Anchorman become one of the most beloved - and quoted - comedies of the last 10 years). If you haven’t seen Anchorman, you are really missing something special. Stay classy, San Diego!

2. THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN - Judd Apatow’s monster hit comedy was Carell’s big breakout role, and a sign of things to come for him. Mixing buckets of big, raunchy, belly-shaking laughs with ample amounts of sweetness and real heart, audiences initially flocked to see this film because of the curiousity-baiting title, but great word of mouth turned it into one of 2005’s biggest sleeper hits.

1. CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE - easily my favorite comedy of 2011, this funny, surprising, heartfelt film was enough to give me faith in the movies again, and in a summer movie season filled with sequels, explosions, and superheroes (hmmm…kinda like this summer also!), this was such a welcome relief. The whole cast is fantastic, and what starts out looking like a ‘Hitch’ knockoff turns into something so much more delicious. I can’t recommend this film highly enough.
