Hawkfest - Stop and Note the Wildlife

Amherstburg - September 13, 2014 - Fall is my favourite season and I'm planning to embrace each day and drag my husband from the humidity of summer to the wonderful briskness of fall. We are advocates for exploring and taking advantage of what's happening in our backyard so yesterday we ventured to Holiday Beach for the Festival of the Hawks.

The HBMO (Holiday Beach Migration Observatory) are volunteers dedicated to the study and monitoring of migratory birds. We got an up close look at two baby sharp-shinned hawks and an older Peregrine falcon which were adopted and released at a lunch and learn. The Peregrine Foundation also had a tent set-up with information and some beautiful birds - see our pics.

We had a great afternoon and the thrill of seeing a group of American White Pelicans flying overhead which we were told is unusual and we found spectacular. We strolled the beach and the woods and simply enjoyed the sunny day.

Plenty of things to check out on September 14th, 20th and 21st including a Dark Sky Night - Star Gazing. Check out www.hbmo.ca for information, calendar and directions.

You can plan lunch at one of the wineries and a tasting then head to Holiday Beach - a perfect fall day.
