Tesla Arcade: How good is it for gaming?

Tesla was always about „Easter eggs“ and hidden gimmicks for geeks buried deep inside the car’s menu. After all, the company was founded by, according to the Internet council of geeks (yes, that's a real thing), the ultimate geek there is – Elon Musk.

Toronto - Dec. 31, 2021:
Tesla was always about „Easter eggs“ and hidden gimmicks for geeks buried deep inside the car’s menu. After all, the company was founded by, according to the Internet council of geeks (yes, that's a real thing), the ultimate geek there is – Elon Musk. So naturally, his cars have stuff like the fart mode and playing games using the car's steering wheel. Let's find out if playing Beach Buggy Racing 2 on your phone is going to be the same after you try it out in a new Model 3, or any other Tesla for that matter.

When the steering wheel is not enough, there's also a gamepad support

The company was always very proud of its approach to cars. They are treating them more like computers on wheels than cars with computers. And that shows. From sending the updates over-the-air to introducing huge central displays that dominate the cabin and allows for anything from browsing the web, playing slots or controlling every aspect of the car, Tesla automobiles are like nothing else on the market.

Tesla has many hidden features, like James Bond mode. But that's something you have to dig for. On the other hand, Tesla Arcade is taking center stage, as the company is introducing it to the full line of its electric vehicles, including the latest, Model 3. New game hub was introduced with the Beach Buggy Racing 2 video game, also available on iOS and Android. But that game experience is nothing compared to playing it in a Tesla, because you literally play with the car's steering wheel, the best possible controller for racing video games. Now you don't have to be bored while you wait for your wife to get back from the store, or while at the Supercharger station. Joking aside, we don't see it just as a fun feature, but rather as something that's good to have, considering the charging time is much longer than with standard petrol cars.

The new update brought Beach Buggy Racing 2 alongside old-school Atari classics that will appeal to older gamers. For more immersive gaming, Tesla also added gamepad support that allows gaming in your car with a wide array of controllers. New Tesla Arcade is also more accessible. In other words, it's not buried inside the menus but instead available directly from the home screen.

It's weird, but it somehow feels very natural

Game developer Vector Unit went the extra step and optimized the game in collaboration with Tesla engineers. While in the game mode, the steering wheel becomes "loose" so you can turn it easily. Unfortunately, you don't get to press the accelerator pedal for security purposes, only the brake pedal. There is a single player mode, for which you can use the steering wheel or controls on the steering wheel. The two-player mode can also be enjoyed with another person in the passenger's seat if you want double fun. They will play by tapping the screen. Playing with the wheel is undoubtedly more immersive, and your passengers might want to jump in the driver's seat to try it out.

While we don’t see someone bringing their controller to the car just to play some games, children will undoubtedly want to use the feature during long trips. It might come in handy even for longer commutes. And with the list of available games growing bigger, Tesla has hit the spot here.
