Cornwall - Feb. 4, 2011 - On January 23, 2006 Canadians from coast to coast to coast chose the Conservative Party of Canada to govern this great country. What an honour!

Political pundits of the day said that the Canadian public wanted to give the Liberal party of the day a "time out" due to the sponsorship scandal. Voters were not prepared to give the new untested Conservative party, led by Stephen Harper, a majority government but they were prepared to give us a chance to prove ourselves. They voted for a minority Conservative government. The feeling amongst the political elite at the time was that after a brief period on the opposition benches the Liberal party would be returned to power. How wrong they were! On January 23rd 2011 we celebrated our five year anniversary!

Prime Minister Stephen Harper formed a Cabinet, rolled up his sleeves, and went to work. He encouraged all 125 elected Conservative Members of Parliament to do the same. We took his advice. Being grateful to be in government after so many long years in opposition, we worked night and day to prove to Canadians that they made the right decision when they elected us. And we did.

In October of 2008, the good people of Canada again saw fit to return our Conservative party to government with an increase to 143 seats. Grateful for the confidence the Canadian electorate placed in us, we went about dealing with the worst economic global recession since the Second World War. In spite of the fact we have a Minority Government, we are dealing with this devastating global recession while fighting the war in Afghanistan. And I must admit we are not getting much cooperation from the opposition on either issue.

The feedback I get from the constituents of SD&SG indicate that you feel we are doing OK. As the Prime Minister has said, we are not a perfect government but, our country is the envy of world due to the actions we took to create jobs and recover the economy. With the opposition parties threatening to defeat us in the near future we may be going to the polls soon. I hope we have again earned your trust and that this time we will form a majority government.
