Stormont Dundas and South Glengarry - Nov. 8, 2012 - MPP Jim McDonell sent the Honourable Linda Jeffrey, Minister of Labour, the following open letter regarding the loss of jobs at Teleperformance.

The Hon. Linda Jeffrey
Minister of Labour
14th Floor, 400 University Ave
Toronto, ON M7A 1T7

Honourable Minister,

Today, a large employer in my riding of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry announced the closure of its operations in Cornwall. Teleperformance is yet another casualty of the jobs crisis in Ontario, and our brightest and most driven workers are forced to seek employment outside our Province.

Many among the Teleperformance employees will not receive any severance payments and will have to rely on the federal and provincial social safety nets in order to provide for their families.

Minister, it should not be this way. Ontario has a workforce whose skills, knowledge and drive to succeed are second to none in North America. The Government – which you are part of – should be maximizing business opportunities in our Province.

In today’s job crisis, we celebrate an announcement that a new distribution centre is to open soon in Cornwall. This is great, but it should be the norm. I, for one, wish to see an Ontario where businesses and employers line up for our skilled workers, rather than the other way around.

On behalf of the residents of Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry,

Regards,

Jim McDonell
Member of Provincial Parliament
Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry
