Cornwall - Jun. 10, 2011 - Ontario is helping to reduce the time Cornwall-area residents spend in emergency rooms.

This year, the Cornwall Community Hospital – McConnell Avenue Site is receiving $813,200 to further reduce ER wait times by implementing initiatives such as:

1. ED PIP (Emergency Department Process Improvement Program).

2. Investing in areas across the hospital to improve patient flow and reduce wait times; for example, nursing and other support service enhancements including discharge planning processes.

3. Enhancing physician resources within the area of quality and process improvement with the creation of a new position: Medical Director, Quality and Process Improvement.

The Cornwall Community Hospital – McConnell Avenue Site is also receiving $79,000 in bonus funding for treating more patients within provincial targets in the second half of the last fiscal year. This funding will be used to continue investments targeting at improving the patient experience and wait times in the ER.

As of March 2011, at the Cornwall Community Hospital – McConnell Avenue Site, 82 percent of ER patients were treated within the provincial targets which are four hours for patients with minor/uncomplicated conditions and eight hours for patients with complex or serious conditions.

Today's announcement is part of the government's Open Ontario Plan to provide more access to health care services while improving quality and accountability for patients.
