Finch - Jul. 29, 2011 - South Nation Conservation has loaned 20 fishing rods and miscellaneous tackle to Deer Lake First Nation members being billeted in Smiths Falls because of the forest fire threat in their home region.

The gear, part of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Tackle Share program, has been delivered to the Ministry of Natural Resources office in Kemptville for distribution this week at the Rideau Regional Centre where the evacuees are temporarily residing.

“We keep the equipment on hand to provide to beginners during fishing tournaments and family days along the South Nation River,” said SNC Lands and Fisheries director Pat Piitz.

“The gear is not being used much for events at this time of year, and it seemed that the Smiths Falls guests might appreciate a chance to try their luck in the Rideau River.”

MNR District Manager Ken Durst said the loan was much appreciated.
