Toronto - Sep. 20, 2011 - The Ontario Liberals have delivered on the biggest commitments to Ontario farmers in 25 years.

“Our farmers needed a permanent Risk Management Program and we delivered,” Premier Dalton McGuinty said at the International Plowing Match. “Working together, with our farmers and agri-food sector, we’re providing farmers with predictability, bankability, and stability - the biggest commitment to our farmers in over 25 years.”

Ontario’s farmers put healthy, locally grown food on our tables and the agri-food sector creates jobs in our communities and strengthens our economy. That’s why, over the last eight years, Ontario Liberals have made rural Ontario and our farmers a priority.

Since 2003, we’ve worked hard to develop programs designed by farmers, for farmers including:

  • New, permanent Risk Management Program - giving farmers the predictability, bankability and stability needed to stay on the land.

  • Supporting supply management and continuing to fight for its place in Canadian farming.

  • Working with the Ontario Federation of Agriculture to cut red tape by 28 per cent in six months.

“Rural Ontario families need an experienced hand at the tiller so we can move forward, together, in uncertain times,” said Carol Mitchell, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs in the Ontario Liberal government. “We need the strong, steady leadership that only Dalton McGuinty can provide. Only Ontario Liberals have a plan to move Ontario forward - and I’m very proud to see that our strong plan includes supporting our farmers with a permanent Risk Management Program.”

The Hudak PCs have flip-flopped on risk management, refusing to stand up to the federal Harper Conservatives who oppose it. And the Horwath NDP barely mentions agriculture or farms in their platform.

Only the Ontario Liberals have a plan to keep building a strong and prosperous rural Ontario " one that will continue to support farm families for generations to come.
