Plymouth - June 21, 2013 - Plymouth Whalers General Manager and Head Coach Mike Vellucci announced the commitment of 18-year-old right wing Spencer Lee to a Standard Ontario Hockey League Player’s Agreement.
Lee was taken by the Whalers in the 11th round (207th overall) of the 2011 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection.
"Spencer plays with a lot of energy and has good speed," said Plymouth Assistant General Manager Brian Sommariva. "He's willing to go into the corners and plays with tenacity. He's a committed hockey player who works incredibly hard.”
Lee - 5-foot-10 and 170 pounds, from Brantford, ON - has spent the last two seasons playing in New England with Northfield Mount Hermon in Massachusetts, where he scored 24 goals with 24 assists for 48 points in 56 games. He also played lacrosse at Northfield Mount Hermon.
Lee was originally selected by Plymouth in 2011 after scoring 16 goals and 17 assists for 33 points in 30 games for the Brantford 99ers minor midgets in 2010-11.
Lee is expected to report to Plymouth in time for training camp in late August.
Lee is the third player to commit to the Whalers for 2013-14. Plymouth also received commitments from 17-year-old defenseman Josh Wesley, who was taken by the Whalers in the fifth round in the 2012 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection and defenseman Mathieu Henderson (17), a seventh round pick in the 2012 OHL Draft.
In trades this earlier this off-season, Plymouth acquired left wing Carter Sandlak from the Belleville Bulls in exchange for a draft choice and picked up center Francesco Vilardi from Sudbury for a draft choice. In addition, the Whalers traded overage goaltender Matt Mahalak to Kingston for a pair of draft choices and dealt Cody Payne to Saginaw for two draft choices.
Last season, the Whalers made the playoffs for the 22nd consecutive year - a current OHL record - and captured their 12th West Division title over 23 years. Plymouth expects to be in thick of the Western Conference race again in 2013-14.
