Wilkes-Barre Scranton - October 7, 2013 - The WBS Penguins opened their 2013-14 season tonight , against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, no not on home ice tonight the boys were on the road but none the less the WBS Penguin fans were ready with radios, computers, Cell phones and whatever other type of technology they need to get their hockey fix.

WBS would get the first chance on the power play tonight just 5:32 into the game as Bridgeport’s Halmo would sit for interference but would not get anything of quality out of it. Just as the Sound Tigers kill it off Gibbons would get called for a hold putting Bridgeport on their first power play of the night. WBS would get a second chance on the power play thanks to Halmo for elbowing during the power play the feed went blank Harrington got a power play goal putting the Pens up 1-0.

Seems that Letourneau-Leblond and Gallant wanted to dance early on and did seemed like an even battle, WBS would get a third chance in the first on the power play three quarters through the power play Kuhnhackl would take an interference penalty making it 4 on 4 for about 35 seconds then a Sound Tigers power play. WBS would give the Sound Tigers a late power play creating some carry over into the second period for Bridgeport.

The WBS Penguins kill off the carry over power play but just after WBS was full Strength Bridgeports Lee puts one past Deslauriers making it even at one early in the second period. Still early in the second Bridgeport would get their second goal of the night as Kabanov gets one past Deslauriers now 2-1 Sound Tigers.

WBS would get two power plays later in the second and would give Bridgeport a power play between their two neither side would convert on the man advantage keeping it a 2-1 game advantage Bridgeport. WBS would get a lat e power play as Bridgeport gets called for interference, WBS would make it count as Chris Conner puts in a rebound goal making it two all with just three seconds left in the period.

:58 into the third Despres and Persson get matching minors for roughing creating some 4 on 4 hockey but ti doesn’t create chances for either side everything still even at two early on in the third. Penguins get some chances on Nilsson but he keeps then out thats until Gibbons and Conner come in on him Gibbons gets a nice pass to the tape of C hris Conner who goes top shelf making it 3-2 Pens. Then right off the face off Zolnierczyk throws a low shot on net putting it under Nilsson’s pad making it 4 to 2 WBS all in eleven seconds. With all that Chris Conner would go on HTA and almost get it but Nilsson would come up with a shoulder save then Zolnierczyk would put it in making it 5-2 Penguins.

With just 1:31 left in regulation Bridgeport was going to get a power play as Mikkleson was getting called for boarding a Sound Tiger but then Bridgeport’s Bruton Nullified it getting called for a fight Sill and Persson do a little square dance and get sent off refs keep it even for the last minute or so at 4 on 4 well that is until Samuelson gets tagged for a hold making it 3 on 4 of the last seconds.

WBS would hold the door closed keeping it a 5-2 contest winning the 2013-14 season opener on the road

On a related note we tweeted out to Patrick McGrath to say Congrats to him for his first career goal down in Wheeling.
