Everett - August 31, 2013 - The Everett Silvertips opened the 2013-14 WHL preseason with a 2-1 victory over the Victoria Royals Friday night at Comcast Arena.

The contest was the first of three for the Silvertips during this weekend’s 10th annual Holiday Inn Preseason Classic tournament in downtown Everett.

The ‘Tips take on the Spokane Chiefs Saturday night at home in their second matchup.

Reid Petryk and Dawson Leedahl connected for the Silvertips first goal of the tournament before Matt Pufahl and Linden Penner tallied their first points in Everett uniforms as the ‘Tips built a 2-0 lead through two periods.

Austin Lotz stopped 17 of 18 shots in net to earn the win while playing all 60 minutes in goal.

Everett came out firing in the first period, outshooting Victoria 12-8 through 20 minutes of play. The Silvertips opened up the scoring at the 13:05 mark after Reid Petryk laid a huge hit along the boards and then buried a pass from Dawson Leedahl to give Everett a 1-0 lead after one.

The Silvertips tacked on another goal in the second for a 2-0 advantage heading into the final period. Everett made quick work of a powerplay opportunity, scoring only nine seconds in when veteran defenseman Matt Pufahl made a nice move around a defender and then found Linden Penner for a redirection inside the far post. Shots were 19-13 in favor of the ‘Tips after 40 minutes of play.

Victoria cut the lead in half with a powerplay goal early in the third. The puck came loose after a scramble in front of the net to the stick of Logan Nelson, who fired a shot along the near post. Everett killed off a late penalty in the third to retain their lead with less than four minutes left in the game. In a final attempt to tie the game, Victoria pulled goaltender Coleman Vollrath for an extra attacker, but the Silvertips held strong to come away with a 2-1 victory.

The Silvertips outshot the Royals 25-18 in the game and both teams finished 1 for 5 on the powerplay. Patrik Polivka started in goal for Victoria and stopped 17 of 19 shots in 33 minutes before Vollrath came in to stop all six shots he faced.

The Holiday Inn Preseason Classic continues Saturday at Comcast Arena with three more games: Tri-City vs. Portland at 11:30 am, Seattle vs. Victoria at 3:00 pm and the Silvertips finishing off day 2 of the tournament against the Spokane Chiefs at 7:00 pm.
