Everett - August 31, 2013 - The Silvertips scored late in the third period and ultimately secured victory after six rounds in the shootout as Everett defeated the Spokane Chiefs 3-2 Saturday night at Comcast Arena.

The ‘Tips improved to 2-0 in exhibition play following their second win in as many tries during 10th annual Holiday Inn Preseason Classic tournament.

Everett will look to complete a weekend sweep as they finish the tournament Sunday night at 7:00 pm against the Portland Winterhawks.

Forward Manraj Hayer scored the tying goal in the third period and the game-winning goal in the shootout, while Carson Stadnyk notched the Silvertips’ other goal.

Daniel Cotton turned away 18 of the 20 shots he faced in net and stopped five of six Spokane shootout attempts, while the ‘Tips penalty killing unit was a perfect 5 for 5 on the night.

Plenty of blocked shots resulted in a combined total of only eight shots on net in the first period. Everett had three powerplay opportunities, but it was Spokane who opened up scoring midway through the period. The Chiefs created a 2-on-1 into the Silvertips zone and Adam Helewka finished off the passing with a low shot inside the post to beat Cotton. Shots were 5-3 in favor of the ‘Tips after 20 minutes.

Everett got on the board late in the second period to tie the game heading into the final frame. The Silvertips powerplay came together when Carson Stadnyk skated into the slot and released a quick shot to the top corner. The ‘Tips killed off their third penalty of the game in the final minutes of the second to keep the score tied at one. Everett continued to lead 15-13 on the shot clock heading into the final period.

Spokane regained their lead minutes into the frame after Dominic Zwerger picked up a rebound and fired it on net to put the Chiefs up 2-1. Everett tied the game late in the period with its second powerplay goal of the game as Manraj Hayer fired a centering pass that ricocheted off a skate in front and through the legs of goaltender Trevor Martin for the tying goal that ultimately led to overtime action. Shots were 21-20 for the ‘Tips through 60 minutes of play.

Both teams had scoring chances through the five minutes of OT with Ben Betker narrowly missing the net in the dying seconds as the game went to a shootout. The teams stayed even after the first round of shooters with Keanu Yamamoto scoring first for Spokane and Ty Mappin following suit for the ‘Tips. The goaltenders shut the door for the next four rounds of shooters and Daniel Cotton did his part again in round six before Hayer followed up with a beautiful backhand shot to the top corner to secure a 3-2 win for Everett.

Final shots were 23-20 in favor of Everett, which finished 2 for 8 on the powerplay. Garret Hughson started in net for Spokane and stopped all 12 shots he faced in nearly 32 minutes before Trevor Martin came in to make eight saves on ten shots.

The Holiday Inn Preseason Classic concludes Sunday with the last three tournament games at Comcast Arena: Tri-City vs. Victoria at 11:30 am, Spokane vs. Seattle at 3:00 pm and Everett facing off against the Portland Winterhawks at 7:00 pm.
