Cougars earn second straight victory, downing Tigers 4-1
Two goal efforts from Jari Erricson and Jordan Tkatch proved to be too much for the Medicine Hat Tigers, as the Prince George Cougars registered their second win in less than 24 hours, with a 4-1 victory on Sunday afternoon. The Cougars will return home and put their 2-0 record on the line next Friday night, as they host the Edmonton Oil Kings at the CN Centre.

St.Albert - September 1, 2013 - Sunday afternoon in St. Albert, AB, the Prince George Cougars earned their second consecutive preseason victory. Jari Erricson and Jordan Tkatch both scored twice en route to a 4-1 victory against the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The first period did not result in any goals for either team, but it wasn’t due to a lack of chances. The Cougars outshot the Tigers 11-5, but were unable to capitalize on some power play chances.

More of the same in the second period, as the Cougars received three separate power play chances, but were unable to capitalize.

Late in the second period, the Cougars were finally able to solve goaltender Zac Robidoux. At 15:15 of the second period, Jari Erricson (unassisted) scored the game’s first goal. 20 seconds later off a faceoff, Jordan Tkatch buried his first of the preseason with Jarrett Fontaine and Sam Ruopp assisting.

Cole Sanford put the Tigers on the board with a late goal in the second, but the Cougars took a 2-1 lead into the intermission and had a 26-13 edge in the shots department through 40 minutes.

At 5:37 of the third, Jari Erricson netted his second of the game to further increase the Cougars lead. Josh Anderson and Jansen Harkins both added assists to extend their preseason point-streaks to two games.

One minute later, Jordan Tkatch struck again. This time his goal was unassisted. Tkatch’s goal would prove to be the game’s final tally, and the Cougars held on for the 4-1 victory. The final shot tally had Prince George outshooting Medicine Hat 40-21.

Brett Zarowny was solid in goal turning aside 20 of the 21 shots he faced to earn his first victory of the 2013 preseason.

Special teams were a struggle for both teams as the Cougars went zero-for-12 on their power play chances while the Tigers failed to score on all seven of their man advantages.

The Prince George Cougars will now return home and will put their 2-0 record on the line on Friday night when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings at the CN Centre.
