Chiefs edge Americans in home opener
On the strength of two more goals from a red-hot Mitch Holmberg, the Spokane Chiefs celebrated their 2013-14 home opener in style, edging the Tri-City Americans by a score of 2-1 in Saturday night WHL action.

Spokane - September 29, 2013 - Mitch Holmberg wasn't about to cool down now that he's finally playing on home ice.

Behind Holmberg, the Spokane Chiefs beat the Tri-City Americans 2-1 at Spokane Arena in front of 8,811 fans on Saturday Night.

Holmberg scored twice, once both in the second and third periods, to push the Chiefs to victory.

Holmberg's first goal of the night came in the second period at 4:25 to tie the game at one goal each. Center Mike Aviani and defenseman Cole Wedman assisted on the goal, Spokane's first of the season at the Arena. The Chiefs then took the lead for good in the third period at the 4:25 minute mark, as Holmberg scored again for his WHL-leading eighth goal of the season, this one assisted by Aviani and center Liam Stewart. Aviani leads the WHL with seven assists.

The Spokane offense kept Tri-City goalie Eric Comrie busy all night, as the Chiefs outshot the Americans 38-16. In the final period, the Americans only managed six shots compared to the Chiefs 15.

Defense was key in Saturday night's game and Spokane goalie Eric Williams was up to the task in net. Williams stopped 15 of 16 shots sent his way, including a barrage of shots on goal late in the third period.

The Chiefs travel to Portland to face the Winterhawks on Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. match up. Spokane will return home Tuesday, October 8, for a 7:05 p.m. game against the Kelowna Rockets.
